We have natural resources that serve as the foundation for the quality of life of our citizens, contribute to the economic vitality of our county, and offer a competitive advantage as we transition into a new technology era. The county must make smart investments and develop long range plans focused on safeguarding its citizens, protecting the environment, and ensuring that our natural treasures are preserved for future generations. Washtenaw must also support industries like agriculture, tourism, outdoor recreational activities, and renewable energy. Priority should be given to streamlining the permitting processes to allow freer flow of investment dollars into the county.
The FairTax is Fair - (Don't confuse with Flat or VAT Tax proposals) It replaces the federal income tax system, which taxes what we earn, with a tax on what we spend. The FairTax is a consumption tax: the more you buy, the more you pay in taxes; the less you buy, the less you pay in taxes. So everyone pays fairly when they choose to spend, including illegal immigrants, foreign visitors (about 50,000 each year), and those who evade paying taxes under the income tax system. The FairTax:
FAIR TAX CALCULATOR ---> http://www.fairtax.org/site/PageServer?pagename=calculator Michael Reagan Becomes Honorary Chairman of the FairTax National Victory Campaign Friday, January 15, 2010 FairTax will attract trillions of dollars of foreign investment into the U.S. economy and bring back trillions more in American investments currently in offshore accounts and investments, expand the national tax base dramatically to include taxation of those who illegally avoid taxation or benefit from special tax breaks to the politically powerful, and lift the weight of federal taxes and payroll deductions entirely from millions of poor and elderly. "It is the shortest path to full economic recovery and millions of new jobs, ending Congressional corruption of the tax code and providing significant tax relief to the middle class", he said. "The FairTax ends the special benefits enjoyed by the political class which has so badly hurt our economy." "Bar Stool Economics" – How Tax Cuts Work?
Suppose that every day, ten men go out for beer and the bill for all ten comes to $100 and If they paid their bill the way we pay our taxes, it would go something like this: The first four men (the poorest) would pay nothing. The fifth would pay $1. The sixth would pay $3. The seventh would pay $7. The eighth would pay $12. The ninth would pay $18. The tenth man (the most successful) would pay $59.) So, that's what they decided to do. The ten men drank in the bar every day and seemed quite happy with the arrangement, until one day, the owner threw them a curve. "Since you are all such good customers," he said, "I'm going to reduce the cost of your daily beer by $20." so drinks for the ten now cost just $80. The group still wanted to pay their bill the way we pay our taxes so the first four men were unaffected...They would still drink for free...But what about the other six men - the paying customers? How could they divide t he $20 windfall so that everyone would get his 'fair share?'...They realized that $20 divided by six is $3.33...But if they subtracted that from everybody's share, then the fifth man and the sixth man would each end up being paid to drink his beer. So, the bar owner suggested that it would be fair to reduce each man's bill by roughly the same amount, and he proceeded to work out the amounts each should pay. And so: The fifth man, like the first four, now paid nothing (100% savings). The sixth now paid $2 instead of $3 (33%savings). The seventh now pay $5 instead of $7 (28%savings). The eighth now paid $9 instead of $12 (25% savings). The ninth now paid $14 instead of $18 (22% savings). The tenth now paid $49 instead of $59 (16% savings). Each of the six was better off than before...And the first four continued to drink for free...But once outside the restaurant, the men began to compare their savings. "I only got a dollar out of the $20,"declared the sixth man. He pointed to the tenth man," but he got $10!" "Yeah, that's right," exclaimed the fifth man. "I only saved a dollar, too. It's unfair that he got ten times more than I!" "That's true!!" shouted the seventh man. "Why should he get $10 back when I got only two? The wealthy get all the breaks!" "Wait a minute," yelled the first four men in unison. "We didn't get anything at all. The system exploits the poor!" The nine men surrounded the tenth and beat him up. The next night the tenth man didn't show up for drinks, so the nine sat down and had beers without him. But when it came time to pay the bill, they discovered something important. They didn't have enough money between all of them for even half of the bill! And that, ladies and gentlemen, journalists and college professors, is how our tax system works. The people who pay the highest taxes get the most benefit from a tax reduction. Tax them too much, attack them for being wealthy, and they just may not show up anymore. In fact, they might start drinking overseas where the atmosphere is somewhat friendlier. For those who understand, no explanation is needed. For those who do not understand, no explanation is possible. "It is not a government's obligation to provide services, but to see that they are provided."
—former New York Governor Mario Cuomo Many functions provided for our citizens are not being shopped around for the best value for our money. We may be getting great services, but we should be confident to prove this to our citizens. Establishing our service goals as best value, will make our county more attractive to business (job) investment. Bidding processes should be established with online announcements, and competitive for all appropriations of Tax dollars. Services provided by public branches will compete as well for proposals. Services to be rendered will be expected to be settled with comparable goals to the other best in class counties, and nearby state averages for reality checks. "Competition done right drives down costs and incentivizes performance. Private firms operating under government contracts have strong incentives to deliver on performance—after all, their bottom line would be negatively impacted by the cancellation of an existing contract or losing out to a competitor when that contract is subsequently re-bid. On the government's side, applying competition forces management to identify the true cost of doing business, and, with efficiency as a goal, compels an agency to use performance measurement to track and assess quality and value. At its root competition promotes innovation, efficiency and greater effectiveness in serving the shifting demands of customers. Oftentimes, this allows contractors to provide comparable or even superior wages and benefits while reducing service costs and improving service levels. You have two families: "Joe Legal" and "Jane Illegal". Both families have two parents, two children, and live in California. Joe Legal works in construction, has a Social Security Number and makes $25.00 per hour with taxes deducted. Jane Illegal also works in construction, has NO Social Security Number, and gets paid $15.00 cash "under the table". Ready? Now pay attention... Joe Legal: $25.00 per hour x 40 hours = $1000.00 per week, or $52,000.00 per year.. Now take 30% away for state and federal tax; Joe Legal now has $31,231.00. Jane Illegal: $15.00 per hour x 40 hours = $600.00 per week, or $31,200.00 per year. Jane Illegal pays no taxes. Jane Illegal now has $31,200.00. --------------- Joe Legal pays medical and dental insurance with limited coverage for his family at $600.00 per month, or $7,200.00 per year. Joe Legal now has $24,031.00. Jane Illegal has full medical and dental coverage through the state and local clinics at a cost of $0.00 per year. Jane Illegal still has $31,200.00. --------------- Joe Legal makes too much money and is not eligible for food tamps or welfare. Joe Legal pays $500.00 per month for food, or $6,000.00 per year. Joe Legal now has $18,031.00. Jane Illegal has no documented income and is eligible for food stamps and welfare. Jane Illegal still has $31,200.00. --------------- Joe Legal pays rent of $1,200.00 per month, or $14,400.00 per year. Joe Legal now has $9,631.00. Jane Illegal receives a $500.00 per month federal rent subsidy. Jane Illegal pays out that $500.00 per month, or $6,000.00 per year. Jane Illegal still has $ 31,200.00. ---------------- Joe Legal pays $200.00 per month, or $2,400.00 for auto insurance. Joe Legal now has $7,231.00. Jane Illegal says, "We don't need no stinkin' auto insurance!" and still has $31,200.00. -------------------- Joe Legal has to make his $7,231.00 stretch to pay utilities, gasoline, etc. Jane Illegal has to make her $31,200.00 stretch to pay utilities, gasoline, and what she sends out of the country every month. ---------------------- Joe Legal now works overtime on Saturdays or gets a part time job after work. Jane Illegal has nights and weekends off to enjoy with her family. ----------------------- Joe Legal's and Jose Illegal's children both attend the same school... Joe Legal pays for his children's lunches while Jane Illegal's children get a government sponsored lunch. --------------------- Jane Illegal's children have an after school ESL program. Joe Legal's children go home. --------------------- Joe Legal and Jane Illegal both enjoy the same police and fire services, but Joe paid for them and Jane did not pay. ----------------------- Do you get it, now? How I feel about illegal aliens, is that they are illegal. Seal the borders as mandated, and then work on reforms. Illegals hurt not just by diminishing those entering legally, but also drain the government system to an unfair advantage.
The "Show Me" state has once again showed us how it should be done. They need more publication and exposure on this. Let's pass it around. In 2007, Missouri placed on the ballot a proposed constitutional amendment designating English as the Official language of Missouri. Nearly 90% voting in favor! English became the official language for ALL governmental proceeding in Missouri. It also means no individual has the right to demand government services in a language OTHER than English. In 2008 a measure was passed that requires our Highway Patrol and other law enforcement officials to verify the immigration status of any person arrested, and inform federal authorities if the person is found to be here illegally. It allows Missouri law enforcement offices to receive training to enforce federal immigration laws. The bill makes it clear that illegal immigrants will NOT have access to taxpayers benefits such as food stamps and health care through Missouri HealthNET. In 2009 a measure was passed that ensures Missouri's public institutions of higher education do NOT award financial aid to individuals who are here illegally. The law also requires all post-secondary institutions of higher education to annually certify to the Missouri Dept. of Higher Education that they have NOT knowingly awarded financial aid to students who are unlawfully present in the United States. So while Arizona has made national news for its new law, it is important to remember Missouri has been proactive in addressing this growing problem. Missouri has sent a clear message that illegal immigrants are NOT welcome in our state and they are certainly NOT welcome to receive public benefits at the cost of Missouri taxpayers! We need to encourage our students to stay in state.
That is why I agree with Rob Steele on the following: • Guaranteed acceptance for Michigan’s top performing high school graduates. • Use endowment to increase merit based tuition assistance for in-state students • Encourage internships, research projects, and international studies with Michigan based companies • Develop a tuition refund program from the endowment for students graduating with hard science degrees who stay and work in Michigan • Limit enrollment of out of state and foreign students until all qualified Michigan high school graduates are accommodated" Borrowed from Support Rob Steele for University of Michigan Regent. http://drrobsteeleforregent.com/ 06/17/2012
The Texas plan provides automatic admission for the top ten percent of students in every Texas high school. The census is being used to apportion votes in the House of Representatives based on population, not of Citizens The census does not take into account illegals and others not eligible to vote or receive government benefits. Only citizens would be allowed programs using tax dollars allocated through voting. I am for allocation based on Citizen population only.
